Srikrishna Committee Report

The Justice Srikrishna Committee Report was delivered to the Indian Union Home Ministry on December 30, 2010. The report was officially signed by the committee members at 11:30 am on December 30.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh held an emergency meeting on December 29 to discuss the Telangana issue. The meeting was attended by Minister of Defence AK Antony, Minister of Home Affairs P Chidambaram, Minister of Finance Pranab Mukherjee and Minister of Law Veerappa Moily.

Members

The Justice Sri Krishna Committee for separate Telangana constitutes the following members.

• Justice Srikrishna - Bellur Narayanaswamy Srikrishna, is a retired Judge of the Supreme Court of India. He is well known for his "Srikrishna Commission" which investigated causes of the 1992-93 Bombay Riots.
• Vinod Duggal - IAS, former Union Home Secretary
• Ravindar Kaur - professor, IIT Delhi
• Abusaleh Sharif - Senior Research Fellow at the New Delhi Office of International Food Policy Research Institute
• Ranbir Singh - Vice-Chancellor, National Law University

History

In March 2010, a five member committee was constituted in March 2010, called the 'Justice Sri Krishna Committee' to draft a report for the separate statehood of Telangana. The committee is expected to submit its report by the end of 2010.

Report submission

On December 30, 2010, the Committee submitted its report to the Union Home Ministry which said it will convene a meeting with 8 registered parties of the state on January 6, 2010. The report will be made available to public the same evening.

All Party Meeting

Home Minister P Chidambaram has convened an all party meeting in New Delhi on January 6, 2011. TRS, BJP and TDP have decided not to attend the meeting.

Recommendations

The Sri Krishna Committee has made six recommendations to the Union Government. The following are the recommendations made:

1. Maintain status quo; To keep the state united; Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister from the two regions
2. To Bifurcate into Seemandhra and Telangana states, which reflects the situation before 1956. To make Hyderabad as a Union Territory
3. To combine Rayalaseema and Telangana regions as RayalaTelangana state and a separate Seemandhra state. Hyderabad to remain with RayalaTelangana.
4. To Bifurcate into Seemandhra and Telangana states with enlarged Hyderabad comprising of Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Nalgonda and Mahaboobnagar districts as a Union Territory.
5. Seemandhra and Telangana states, with Hyderbad as capital of Telangana. Seemandhra to have a separate capital.
6. To keep the state united with constitution of Telangana Regional Council to look into Socio-Economic and Political development.
