HYDERABAD :

Demanding that the government should bring a bill in the Parliament for creation of Telangana state, a large number of students  boycotted their post-graduate, MCA and law examinations in the Osmania University and its affiliated colleges which began today.

The boycott call was given by the OU Joint Action Committee (OUJAC).  Irrespective of the poor turnout, the university authorities decided to go ahead with the examinations tomorrow.

The boycott of examinations was total on the OU campus and its four constituent colleges - Koti Women’s college, Nizam College and the PG Colleges at Saifabad and Secunderabad. Not a single student wrote the examination in these colleges.

The OU campus was heavily fortified and only the candidates with hall tickets were allowed to enter the campus. The students, however, gathered at the Arts College and tore away the hall tickets as a protest against the conduct of the examinations despite stiff opposition from the student community. The OUJAC leaders later took out a procession till the Law College. They vowed not to write the examinations till a bill for separate Telangana is introduced in the coming Parliament session.

In the afternoon, the OUJAC students went around the Andhra Mahila Sabha and Law College examination centres where the MCA and LLB examinations were held respectively. They ‘appealed’ to the students to boycott the examinations for the sake of Telangana and majority of them obliged. Very few, mostly girls, however, pleaded not to disturb the examination process.

The girls were disturbed over the fact that other students, whose examination centres were outside the OU campus, were writing the examination. The OUJAC leaders, however, persuaded them to boycott the examinations and they obliged.

According to OU authorities, only 18.1 per cent of students appeared for the post-graduate examinations while 32 per cent attended the MCA examinations across OU. The attendance for law examination was 41 per cent.

According to reports, the boycott was total in districts like Nalgonda, Medak and Mahabubnagar. Only students whose examinations centres fell on the outskirts of the city appeared for the examination. “The response to the boycott call was total. We will boycott the examinations tomorrow also,’’ OUJAC spokesperson P Kailash said.

Meanwhile, the student JAC is planning to send one lakh letters to governor ESL Narasimhan asking him to stop giving false reports to the Centre about the situation in  Telangana.
